Giorgos Sakkas PhD
Dr. Giorgos Sakkas is a Professor at the School of Physical Education and Sport Science at the University of Thessaly, Greece, with a specialty in Clinical Exercise Physiology. His scientific career begun at the University of Athens where he was awarded a BSc in the field of exercise sciences and swimming coaching. After he completed his postgraduate and PhD studies in the field of Exercise Physiology in the United Kingdom, he moved to the University of California San Francisco in USA as a research fellow at the Department of Medicine for 5 more years in order to specialize in aspects related to muscle diseases and rehabilitation. He returned to Europe in 2005 with an independent competitive European grant and later joined the faculty at the University of Thessaly. Dr. Sakkas leads Master modules in Exercise Rehabilitation, Exercise for Health and Military Fitness programs while he currently heads a research group of 7 researchers.
Dr. Giorgos Sakkas has a long sporting and coaching career. In his early years he was a National Swimming Champion in breaststroke and worked as a swimming coach in many clubs. An avid spearfishing enthusiast he has been competing in all free diving and pool disciplines and coaching many freedivers since 2005. He holds a national record in the discipline of DNF since 2015.
Dr Sakkas not only competed but also served as Greece’s National Team Captain for the last two AIDA Depth World Championships. He has translated and edited to Greek the book of Umberto Pelizzari “The Manual of Free Diving” and is a lead author in many scientific papers and book chapters. Since 2006 he is a certified Life Guard Instructor. Since 2008 is an International Apnea Academy Instructor.
